What is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)?
PID – in full form Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, is an infectious and inflammatory disorder of the female reproductive organs which includes the uterus, Fallopian tubes, cervix and the ovaries resulting in uterine infection or uterus infection, cervical infection, ovarian infection or infection of the Fallopian tubes.
What causes Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)?
The infection is often sexually transmitted and first occurs in the vagina or the cervix (lower genital tract) and is often asymptomatic. Over time, the micro-organisms from the vagina or the cervix ascend to infect the upper genital tract (uterus, Fallopian tubes and ovaries). In addition to this, sometimes the antibiotic treatment of the sexually transmitted infection (STI) can disrupt the flora of the lower genital tract causing non-pathogenic organisms to overgrow and ascend the upper genital tract causing infection of the reproductive organs.
The organisms most commonly causing PID are N gonorrhoeae and C trachomatis. In some cases, bacteria that are present in the vagina and are usually harmless can also cause PID. This can occur after child-birth, miscarriage or abortion. C trachomatis is an inter-cellular bacterial pathogen and the predominant sexually transmitted bacteria causing PID.
What are the Signs and symptoms of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)?
The signs and symptoms of PID are usually mild and subtle. In some women, it can even be asymptomatic and this is not realized at the time of conceiving but only after the woman suffers chronic pain in the abdomen.
The common Pelvic Inflammatory Disease symptoms are:
- Feeling of nausea and wanting to throw up
- Stinging pain during sex or while urine discharge
- Abnormal bleeding associated with uterine. It, particularly occurs, during and after sexual intercourse and in-between menstrual cycles

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is a disease common in women who
- Are sexually active at age less than 25 years and are having sex with multiple sex partners without the use of contraception

What can happen if Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is left untreated?
If Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is left untreated for a long time, it can cause serious health problems, and can even be life threatening. Untreated PID can cause severe complications like:
- Tubal (ectopic) pregnancy- Untreated PID can cause a scarred tissue to be formed in the Fallopian tubes which prevent the fertilized egg to pass through the Fallopian tubes and get implanted in the uterus. As a result, the egg gets implanted in the Fallopian tubes itself resulting in ectopic pregnancies causing massive bleeding and danger to life
- Infertility- PID can cause damage to a female’s reproductive organs resulting in infertility meaning inability to conceive a child.
- Chronic pelvic pain- PID can cause pelvic pain that can last for months and even years scarring pelvic organs
- Tubo-ovarian abscess- PID may cause abscess or collection of pus most commonly in the Fallopian tubes and ovaries which can be life threatening

These tests would show the infection through the imaging of the structures of the pelvis.
How to prevent Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)?
To prevent Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), you can take a few precautions like
Practice safe sex: Use condom every-time for safe sex. Limit the number of partners and know your partner’s history before having an intercourse
Get tested: If you are at the risk of an STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection), book an appointment with your doctor. Early treatment of STI will hugely reduce the risk of PID
Testing of partner: If you have PID or STI, getting your partner tested and treated will prevent the spread of STI and recurrence of PID
